Waste Management Increased Recycling
by the Bucket at Annual Sandcastle Competition
Waste Management continues to organize recycling and waste services for the American Institute of Architects Annual Sandcastle Competition. At last year's event, which attracted 17,000 people, over 4.28 tons of recyclable materials were collected making it a historical case study.

Waste Management worked with the city of Houston to green the 2011 Houston Marathon, and collect valuable data in preparing the city for next year's Olympic Trials. The diligent observation and in-depth documentation by Waste Management consultants led to the prediction that a whopping 81.2 percent landfill diversion is possible for the 2012 trials event.

Waste Management introduced additional green practices at the 2011 Phoenix Open, making the event an even greater eco-success. Progressive initiatives included the use of "graywater" for restroom toilets, and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks for transporting recyclables. The increased public education and community outreach ultimately resulted in a higher waste diversion rate.
